This is a genuinely good book and, thanks to history, Indian journalist, Aravind Adiga, wrote his first novel not in Hindi but in English. I’d just like to say, through your pages, that I am not. For Indian readers, one of the most upsetting parts of that break-out is that Halwai casts off his family. It is rather noisy but this was where the girl with curly hair was sitting and for the two hours of the journey she bar I was travelling one evening by train from Yeovil Junction in Somerset to Woking in Surrey and noticed that one of the passengers, a woman with long beautiful curly hair, was buried in ‘The White Tiger’.

This was Indian author Aravind Adiga’s debut title, which earned him the Booker prize.

Halwai has come from what Adiga calls the Darkness – the heart of rural India – and manages to escape his family and poverty by becoming chauffeur to a landlord from his village, who goes to Delhi to bribe government officials. Which life does he choose?

It is full of barbed wit, if not – and not trying to be, so far as I can tell – actually funny. I guess the point Adiga is trying to make is that despite the fact that India has reaped a lot of economic successes from globalization, not yiger is benefitting from it.
