I got my education in Holland, so marxism sometimes still seems a little shady. The book itself is lopmba organised for reference and reading. Other books in the series.

Ania Loomba is an Indian literary scholar. The book does what it says on the tin, although one complaint I would make is that Loomba often presumes that the reader is sympathetic to postcolonial studies themselves, rather than just being an interested onlooker.

Her writing is clear, and the introduction and conclusion are just as helpful as the content. I must have underlined and marked half the book.

She currently holds the Catherine Bryson Chair in the English department. I’m probably not smart enough for this book, but I thought it was an awful read.

Though much of the volume as somewhat dry and Byzantine it is a textbook, after allthe sections on feminism and postcolonialism and the conclusion–focusing on globalization, the new American imperialism, etc. It’s exactly the sort of book teachers want their students to read.

The lack of major division leaves her able to dive into each topic with considerable depth, potscolonialism room to draw in the major critical voices in this area and have them engage in broad arguments; it also has the effect of making the book occasionally difficult to orientate oneself within, and to get ‘above’ the discussion.

I’m not really used to that, but it kind of fits some of the points Loomba is trying to make: Definitely a book to keep. She continues to develop her views since the first publication and brings us up to current thought, offering helpful questions and possible responses to global capitalism and the legacy of colonialism today.
